Pointer One

I am keeping a new blog for reviews, roleplaying thoughts, and anything that I can sloppily lump under the term “culture.”

It’s here:

Imaginary Vestibule.

C-c-c-c-hanges

So as was fairly noticeable, we had a hard drive crash here at Innocence Central a couple of weeks ago. Recovery is in progress, nothing was lost, etc. So not very traumatic. On the other hand, it did get me thinking about what I wanted to do with my blog, my LiveJournal, and so forth.

After a bunch of said thinking, I decided to shut down this blog. It’s been around for five years or so, which is probably about enough time. Somewhere back there I got distracted from writing about culture and into politics, which was fun for a few years, but yeah. I’ve lost my zest for that.

For the time being, personal stuff will wind up on my LiveJournal. Chances are very good there’ll be a new blog at a later date, which will feed into my LJ. My LJ will, under the current plan, wind up having posts that the blog doesn’t have. I could draw a Venn diagram but it’s not that hard.

So, good night, Popone! Comments are closed; the archives will stick around for the foreseeable future.

Cynical PageRanking

This isn’t a real post; this is a way to spread what paltry Googlejuice I have.

Hey! Cameron Rogers!

Kicking uphill

Movable Type 3.2 beta?

Yep.

Working OK?

Yep.

Getting a real workout?

Nah.

By the way, SpamLookup? Keeps spam comments away even when you’re completely neglecting your blog. It’s awesome.

Iron curtain time, yo

I’m trying out Brad Choate’s cool new anti-spam plugin. If you have trouble commenting or sending a trackback, please drop me a line. If you’re reading this on Livejournal, ignore it.

Time trials

I converted this blog over to Wordpress 1.5, out of curiosity. For some reason, the front page takes about ten times longer to load in Wordpress. I probably won’t be switching any time soon.

Spring colors

Everything old is new again, particularly my blog design. If you run into issues, drop me a comment or an email.

Excelsior

Population: One is now running Movable Type 3.14. It’s almost a mathematical constant! I also upgraded MT Blacklist to match. Let me know if you see any problems.

Fish and fowl

They’re not personal blogs. They’re not generalist blogs. Oh, hell, I read enough of ‘em — I guess they’re Historical Blogs. Thus, Bostonia, a lovely little series of explorations of Boston’s rich history; Old is the New New, “with a special interest in the history of technology and business in America and the world”; Cliopatria, a lot of smart people talking about history together; and Pillow Talk, a blogaptation of Sei Shonagon’s “Pillow Book.”

(“Blogaptation”: my entry in the ongoing contest for the most painful neologism involving the word “weblog.” But really, it’s hard to beat the original “blog,” isn’t it?)

Out damned spot

I just installed Brad Choate’s MT-DSBL plugin, hacked slightly so that it checks against both the Distributed Sender Blackhole List and the Blitzed Open Proxy Monitor List. (Perhaps I should add SORBS?) Hopefully this’ll cut down on spam.

If this interferes with anyone’s commenting, please let me know.

Edit: it screws up mine. Off for now.

Edit: found the problem (my colo provider’s DNS is somewhat over-zealous). It’s back on.

Onyx squid

Speaking of which, the squidguard blacklists might make really good input for MT-Blacklist. Remember this and try it.

Keeping tabs

I just installed and sorta tested Chad Everett’s MT-Notifier. If all goes as planned, you can now subscribe to comment threads either when you post a comment or without posting a comment. I could make it possible to subscribe to all the comments posted on Popone, too, if there’s a deluge of demand, but I’m kinda not anticipating one.

Oh, and I have six gmail invites, first come first serve.

Kip up

Look, ma, I upgraded to Movable Type 3.1! It’s cool. I am pondering my commenting options; it seems not impossible that I will set the blog to post TypeKey-authenticated comments immediately while screening non-TypeKey-authenticated comments; the legitimate non-TK comments would still get posted, just with a bit of a delay. Or maybe not, since I haven’t had a ton of comment spam recently. Thoughts, bearing in mind that the easiest thing for all of you (no screening, no worries) requires more effort on my part (deleting spam comments)?

2 years

Some time ago:

For some odd reason I’m not really comfortable posting long ranty things to my LiveJournal. There’s something weird going on in my head there. I think it’s because I have this constant awareness that I’m dropping an acrid pissed off political rant in the middle of a couple of dozen nice peaceful friends pages, between a perfectly harmless quiz answer and a thoughtful introspective discussion of someone’s day. “If I were a Sluggy Freelance character, I would be — holy shit, what the hell got up his ass?” That sort of thing. Also I keep finding myself self-conscious about profanity, cause I know some of my readers aren’t fond of the stuff.

Yeah, still pretty much the case.

A little less than a year ago — August 27th, 2003 — I got the anniversary completely wrong. I still make dumb mistakes, too.

Thanks for visiting, anyhow. I promise to keep writing whenever I have something interesting to say.
