I generally agree with you. Flash is being supported for practical reasons, and Google is doing this to win the fight over native video. Furthermore, I would prefer that Google win this fight, because VP8 is not license encumbered, assuming that VP8 is not patent encumbered. However, H.264 is the most widely used native Web video format. See here.

No, it is not.

First of all, your comment is based on a false premise. H264 is not the most widely used NATIVE web video format. It’s common through Flash, but that’s irrelevant.

The bottom line is that there is no winner when it comes to native web video. On the other hand, Flash is a clear winner when it comes to plugins.

The fight over native video is still going on. That’s why Google is doing this.

Flash is being supported for practical reasons: Maintain market share while pushing WebM as a NATIVE format.

O man, that is not what I wanted to hear. I just finished the Caiphas Cain omnibuses, and was in the store the other day looking at the Horus Heresy novels and was like, “Man, have I sunk so low? NO! No, I’m going to buy them. SURELY they are bad.”

I was struck by this today – I came across some Dennis McKiernan books at Half Price Books, and thought “Oh, those would be great to re-read, I wonder if I can pick them up for the Kindle.” And of course, the answer is no. I can spend $1.50 on the used book, for which the author gets nothing. There’s no way I can give the author money to read the book, and there’s no good way I can read a digital edition. I suppose I could buy the used book, cut the spine, scan it, and OCR it.

In conclusion, I really miss the idea that copyright could expire.
