Sure, I know that

Jeremy Zawodny makes the observation that I’ve made a couple of times; namely, Google’s PageRank is broken. (OK, he’s said it more than once.) In the comments, Phil Ringalda defends Google on the grounds that Jeremy’s page is as good a result for the search terms in question as anything. He discusses the issue further on his own blog. I would just like to note that I am currently the top result for google://population+of+indianapolis.

Vampires in law

Categories: Culture

Yeah, I thought the first rush of news in the White Wolf v. Sony case was done too — but I was wrong (original). Sadly, I’ve missed the first court session. White Wolf wanted a restraining order to prevent Sony from releasing Underworld, but they got an expedited discovery period and a preliminary injunction hearing in a month. My favorite bit of the press release is the bit where the judge denies White Wolf the restraining order because they can’t post a big enough bond to protect Sony from potential damages.

The story in question

Categories: Culture

I read lengthy messageboard threads so you don’t have to. The only useful post on the White Wolf vs. Sony RPG.net thread is a summary of the Nancy Collins story. Probably not a substitute for reading the damned story yourself, but for those us who don’t want to go digging through used bookstores for some old White Wolf anthologies, this is the next best thing.

To remember

Categories: Politics

Okay, sure. “Two years ago, I told the Congress and the country that the war on terror would be a lengthy war, a different kind of war, fought on many fronts in many places. Iraq is now the central front.” — George Bush “Don’t you tell me not to worry about bin Laden Have you forgotten?” — Darryl Worley For the record: no, I haven’t forgotten. I remember quite distinctly where I was and what I was feeling that day. I remember thinking that we needed to find the people responsible and do something about it. I still think that. I hope that, someday, we remember that Osama bin Laden was behind the 9/11 attacks. I hope that the White House will someday devote some time to reminding people who our enemy was and is. ...

Lazyfont

Categories: Typography

Invoking the LazyWeb. I am trying to find this typeface: It is not Bernhard Gothic, although it’s close. However, the “W” is stepped, like Burghley (original) (although much more regular). I have a PDF with this typeface in it, and it’s identified as Malloy, but I cannot find Malloy on the Web. I’m perfectly willing to pay for this, I just can’t find the damned thing. Edit: found it myself; it’s Martin Gothic Bold. (And while I’m at it: ITC Garamond Book Condensed.)

On freedom

Categories: Politics

I love my freedom so much that I am willing to accept certain risks to preserve it. I want, yes, my medical records to be inviolate. We are willing to send soldiers to die in Iraq if we think it will preserve our freedoms. I ask this: what sort of gutless people are willing to risk the lives of others to protect freedom, but are not willing to risk their own? ...

Vote for pictures

Today’s item of interest: the Comic Book Idol (original) competition. I wish I’d stumbled on this earlier, but it’s still fun at this late stage. A bunch of would-be comic book pros are lined up a la American Idol to produce their best work for a panel of celebrity judges, and we get to vote on who gets kicked off the island. Martin Redmond and Jonathan Hickman are doing tres nifty work, in my book. I have no idea who keeps voting for Flores, though.

Late bend

Categories: Reviews

Whoops, I forgot to natter on about Bend It Like Beckham. Well, let me fix that. It’s a cute little romantic comedy about a cute Sikh lass who wants nothing more than to become a football player. (It’s British, so not the NFL.) There’s love, there’s an improbably attractive (original) football coach, and there’s a remarkably sexy best pal. Family concerns get in the way of our heroine’s needs but all is resolved in the end. I’d call it a sterling example of the genre and recommend it.

And the papers say

Categories: Culture

I’ve gotten my hands on the complaint in the White Wolf vs. Sony case. (Link to complaint back, since they redirected it to another server.) Be warned that there are big fat spoilers for Underworld in the complaint. Some notes, thusly. The key White Wolf titles are Vampire: the Masquerade, Werewolf: the Apocalypse, Guide to the Camarilla, Guide to the Sabbat, The Book of Nod, Caine’s Chosen: The Black Hand, Under A Blood Red Moon, Children of the Night, Time of Thin Blood, and Transylvania Chronicles One: Dark Tides Rising. And, of course, Nancy Collins’ The Love of Monsters, which is apparently set in the World of Darkness. ...

Mixtape heaven

Categories: Culture

I don’t recall if I’ve mentioned EMusic before. It’s the best and coolest deal in music downloads; you pay around 10 bucks a month and you can download all the MP3s you want. While you won’t get the latest releases, you will get a huge indie catalog and a pretty significant chunk of major label backlist. I’ve really enjoyed having a subscription. This site is going to make me enjoy it even more. It’s mix tapes made up of songs you can get on EMusic. Since I can just download the songs, and they include links to make that simple, it’s an easy and convenient way to share mix tapes. Cool.
