2/17/2020: Never Let Go (1960): ***
Hey, Britons! Your empire has fallen, your children are unruly disrespectful animals, and you’re probably going to lose your job. The movie opens on a scene of low-lives ripping apart a car, and it’s all destruction from there on in.
2/18/2020: …And the Fifth Horseman Is Fear (1965): *****
“A man is as he thinks. You can’t change that.”
A phenomenal exploration of life under totalitarian rule, wrought subtle to escape Czech Communist censorship. The cinematography is remarkable: fluid and eloquent. The camera is as terrified as its subjects.
Scene after scene left me gasping. The nightclub, reflecting desperation in every stray expression. The doctor’s attic, when he plays the violin. The basement.
This is worth hunting down.
