Some quickies

Hey, let’s do that thing I see the hip kids doing where I stuff a bunch of links into one post!

The Crossgates Mall, quite appropriately, has dropped the charges against Stephen Downs.

Steven Kaye, in comments, pointed me at Eurasianet. Looks like a really good source of info on Turkey and other Eurasian states. (Hey, Steven’s looking for players for an 1890s CoC game. Or, anyhow, was in 1999. Hm.)

It’s easy to forget that Roger Ebert is an intelligent, thoughtful, well-spoken guy. He’s the fat guy who does movie reviews on TV. Read this and admire his pinpoint distinction between vertical and horizontal prayer.

This is post number 500. The most common search leading people to my site is “meaning of population”. Um… it’s not that tough a concept, really. I’ve had 32,637 visitors in the last six months and I love you all the same, damn it.

  1. It’s uncanny how uneasy numbers which are almost, but not quite, 2^n or (2^n)-1 make me.

“No, I’m pretty sure you mean to say you had 32,767 visitors. No, really.”

  2. You have in fact won the geek award for this post.

Also: me too. I was kind of thinking about redoing the log files so that the numbers would come out right.

I cannot express how disturbed I am to make a comment like this and discover that I’ve been beaten to the punch, so I will only add:

    32637 + 131 = 2^15 = (2^3)^5,

    131 is prime, and

    1 + 3 + 1 = 5.

  4. Re: Ebert’s piece.

I’ll say it again, though I’ve said it elsewhere. Matthew 6:5-6 (KJV) says: And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Now, given that that passage fits his point to a T, and given that the piece is dated Ash Wednesday, when that very passage is read in many (Episcopal, and some other Protestant denomination) churches across the country, I can only view the fact that he didn’t even try to reference it as a sign that the Chicago Sun Times is sorely lacking in research staffers.
