Movies reviewed this week: Rebels of the Neon God.
10/12/2020: Rebels of the Neon God (1992): ****
Meditatively bleak, limned with the title’s neon, slowly touring the streets of Taiwan. I kept flashing back to Parasite — not that the themes are the same, unless you count desperation — but the motifs echo. Same flooding, same rain, different streets. Accidental echo in the paternal cab driver. Anything for education, perhaps.
But I’m not sure any of these characters are desperate in the same sense as our Parasite friends. Hsiao Kang wants something but it’s poorly defined. Ah Tze seems pretty happy with his life of petty crime.
Amazing that this was a first movie.
